The Anatolian Cat Breed

The Anatolian cat (turkish shorthair) is a unique natural breed which finds her origin in the Anatolian area. In many regions of Turkey it is called Anadolu Kedisi' (Anatolian cat). Their living area is, like the Turkish Van and the Turkish Angora, not limited to a certain area. Nowadays one can find this breed in many regions in Turkey. In the Zoo of Ankara for instance they keep a white couple of this breed. Besides one can find a few breeders in Turkey. The Anatoli Web(cattery Aksaray) is one of the few sources of information.

In Turkey a white cat still signifies something special. Though, like the Turkish Van and Turkish Angora the Anatolian cat exists in all natural colors, with and without Van markings. Their eye color can be blue, from yellow to dark amber, green or odd/eyed. There is a turkish saying about these cats: "the eyes must be as green as the lake and as blue as the sky".

Their temperament and jump strength are remarkable. They are affectionate and most loving cats if their human tolerates their character. The power of attraction of water to them is striking, yet more than we noticed at the Turkish Van cats. The kittens that grow up near to people are very affectionate and gentle. On the other hand older Anatolian cats, taken from Turkey, often accustom badly.

The head is broad in males and moderately broad in females. The head shows a rounded form towards the jaws. Males have strong muscular cheeks. The nose is medium of length and shows a gentle slope at the height of the eyes. No stop or break, not vaulted. The eyes are large and a bit almond shaped. Slightly oblique. Eye color can be green, bright yellow to dark amber in conformity with the coat color. White cats can have blue or odd eyes (yellow and blue or green and blue). The ears are moderately to large, wide at the base and tapering to the tips. The ears are in proportion to the head - the right size is half the length of the head - and well apart so that 3 fingers can be placed in between. The body is of medium size, strong and muscular. Identical to the Turkish Van. The legs are trim and muscular, medium in length and boning, tapering to neat rounded feet. Back legs are longer than the front. The tail is in proportion to the cat and should reach the shoulder blades. The tip of the tail is slightly rounded. Muscular (no whip tail). Hair is as dense as that of the body. The coat is short and dense. It has a soft silky structure but feels harder, similar to the Turkish Van. The coat lies smoothly to the body and has no wooly undercoat.
